South African writer and journalist Helen Nontando (Noni) Jabavu (1919 – 2008) was born in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Educated in Britain from the age of 13, she is the author of two autobiographical works, Drawn in Colour, African Contrasts (1960) and The Ochre People, scenes from a South African life (1963). In 1961 she became the first African woman editor of a British literary magazine, The New Strand. She moved back to South Africa in 2002.
