Amagama ka Nokutela (Nokutela’s words/names) is a South African women collective’s homage to Nokutela Mdima-Dube (1873-1917), a pioneering newspaper and school co-founder, educator, philanthropist, activist, musician and essayist. Amagama ka Nokutela comes more than a century after Nokutela Mdima-Dube’s death at the age of 44.
The ongoing project is produced by acclaimed women in the Arts. Former magazine editor and creative consultant, Asanda Sizani, TV and film producer Florence Masebe, actress Masasa Mbangeni, media entrepreneur and filmmaker Busi Sizani and poet Siphokazi Jonas. Their Nokutela Mdima-Dube inspired independent project aims to celebrate her life and contributions through multiple avenues of storytelling and conversations.
Amagama Ka Nokutela pays tribute to one of the “Hidden Figures” behind the success of ANC Founder, Mr John Langalibalele Dube, and whose self-sacrifice and leadership is a great source of inspiration for all African women.
